My parents want a dog that does not shed much (short hair) and has a good temperment. Any ideas?

They did have a lhasa (as my husband and I do) and although they LOVE the lhasa's temperment, they would rather have a short haired dog b-c the wood floors kind of got messy with all of the shedding. Do you know of a similarly sized dog with the nice-calm personality of a lhasa with short hair? I told them to get a lhasa and take it to the groomers every month :-D But.. yeah, any ideas would be welcomed. They really don't care for high-strung dogs, playful is ok though..

Like others have said, short haired dogs can/do shed as much as long hair dogs. The difference is there is a bit less grooming with a short haired dog.

Most the toy breeds tend to be high-strung. Not all of them, but in general.

Have your parents do some research on Whippets. They are a medium size dog, short single coat, couch potatoes as adults, quiet, clean, very easy to live with dogs. Size can be from 18 inches up to 23 inches. Weight between 20-40 lbs. They are also a pretty healthy breed compared to most purebreed dogs.

tell them to get a poodle ...either standard or miniature. They don't shed..and they're really nice dogs:)

if they really want to avoid a sheding problem tell them to get a chinese crested

not the most attractive of dogs but they dong shed much due to the breeds baldness

they come in short and long hair but the hair is only in the hear and tail and i think the feet as well

they have to be kept warm though

I personally have a Yorkshire Terrier (best dog in the world)! They have a bad rap for barking and being ankle biters which they are neither. My parents also have one and she is wonderful as well. Neither of them shed, both have loving personalities, and are really overall wonderful dogs. My parents have wood floors and have no problems of any kind. They (yorkie) can be shaved short or left longer--still--no shedding. I also have a pomeranian and he does not shed either. The link below has a good list of dogs that might meet your parents wants in a dog.

Hope this was helpful! Please don't hesitate to ask any other animal related questions at anytime.

Get a smooth minitaure dachshund. I love my weenie! He's the sweetest thing and has a great personality. They are so loveable and loyal. And the short hair ones hardly shed at all. It's great.

Labs are great dogs! Even lab mixes!

I have a Lab Mix he is mixed with rottie and husky and he doesn't shed much at all!

My other dog is a rottie mix. mixed with german shepherd and husky and she sheds way more then my lab mix!

Everytime I sweep the floor I see her hair on the floor but not the lab mixes.

Bulldogs don't shed that much and they love to play too!

You could look in animal shelters or on petfinder.com and find lots of dogs Maybe even the one you want!

Just don't get one from a pet store=puppy Mill

Good luck on your search!

Well short haired dogs can actually shed more than some of the longer haired breeds. Have you looked at the shelter or on www.petfinder.com? Maybe a poodle, Shih Tzu or maybe a small mix maybe good. I would suggest getting a dog around a year and then you'll know energy level and personality. Good luck!

rat terriers are usually a good size, they can range from about 10-20 pounds maybe. they are energetic but very smart, loyal and easy to train usually and like going places with you. they have short hair also. i have one and he is soooo awesome!

I would reccomend going to AKC.com and checking out their breed selector. You can put in all of the qualities you want and tell you which breeds would fit. most of the non-shedding breeds are in the terrier family, beleive it or not. Cairn terriers, Maltese, West Highland White terriers, Yorkies. ASlso, Havenese (awesome personatliteis!), Bichone Frise, Cotons. There are SO many low shedding breeds, but they are normally NOT short haired. And if you groom your dog regularly (every 6-8 weeks, depending on coat) you should be able to minimize shedding in most breeds. Just don't get a spitz. (my fav though!) Good luck, and I hope this helps!

hey! don't be letting these people be telling you that their breed of dog does not shed. all dogs do. all cats do. all people do. anything with hair does. that being said...i have 10 chihuahua's. one sheds alot more than the others. not even half of them are high strung. in fact, 9 of them are laying on me or beside me right now.

Boston terriers are really good dogs

I agree with Nikki. the smooth hair dachshund is very low maintenance. practically no grooming required. just brush the dog to keep the shedding down. they are so cute and the ones I have seen are pretty mellow. good luck.

P.S. I would of course, tell you to get a mini schnauzer, they are pretty mellow, at least mine is. but, they require grooming every 4-6 weeks. But, the positive is they don't shed.

The only short haired dogs i can think of are chihuahuas, labs, chinese crest, pit bull, boxer, pug........dats pretty much it, oh and a doberman.............a pug mite be a good one......or a lab, they are very loyal............i have a chihuahua, she is adorable, but can be annoyin with her high energy............so as much as i luv chihuahuas, i wouldnt recommend them, they are very energetic...............and since they dont care for high energy........so i would recommend a pug or lab...........mainly a lab lol.........i dont think pugs look cute, dats just my opinion........hope u find what your lookin for
