My 19yo gelding tail hair looks chopped off just below the tail bone, we didn't do it. Any idea

My 19yo gelding, overnight, looks like his tail hair was chopped off just below the tail bone. He is not losing hair anywhere else. His tail looks perfectly normal - just very short now. He doesn't appear to be rubbing, we can't find a big chunk of hair stuck anywhere, he gets plenty of food and water, he has a nice barn to get out of the weather- though he doesn't alway use it... Any ideas why his hair all fell out at one length???

If it looks chopped off then it was --I have to agree with some of the others --if he is alone --if not then one of the other horses chewed it off--there is no way a horses tail can just break off at the length you described all by its self--OK we can go way out on a limb here he was standing out in the rain and his tail got soaked and then an instant freeze happened and he went to swat his tail and hit the side of the barn and the darn thing just broke off like an icicle :-) bit far fetched but guess if you squinted your eyes real hard you could imagine that-- :-)

This happened to me once. Someone stole your horses tail. Usually someone that wants to either be mean or make money off it by making items from the tail hair. Watch your neighbors. Someone is not nice.

Are there any other horses around? I had a young horse who chewed my gelding's tail until it was no longer than his hocks. My friend has a dog that keeps her horses' tails short - is that a possibility? Maybe a prankster around your barn cut his tail?

If he is pastured with other horses, another one may have chewed it off...I know several horses this has happened to over the years. One guy I know had to pay for a fake tail for a fellow boarder's horse when his chewed her horse's tail off...right before a big dressage show!

is he in with other horses? one could have chewed it. most of the time a tail will not just do this by itself, someone or something has done this on purpose to your horse. which I know is unfair. the only other thing I could think of is swatting at flies but this takes a bit longer to happen than just overnight. sorry that this has happened, but it will grow back in time. good luck

younger horses will do it. some people can be mean and do it..i know how you feel people cut one of my mares tails off. i was pissed. it will tak time to grow back. i think some one cut it if it is all at a perfect lenght. i'm sorry people are really mean.

I have to agree with everyone else. More than likely, the horse's tail was chewed off by another horse. As his tail begins to grow back you can put something like lemon juice in it to keep the other horses from chewing it or once you find out who the bandit is, separate him.

he probably has worms. all horses get them and itch their rumps on somethings, their hair gets rough arround the tips of the tail and it starts to fall out. Go to your local feed store and pick up some wormer, no biggie.

If it was someone stealing it you're lucky. The thieves local to my area shave the whole dock of the tail to the skin, not a hair left. It happens to older, gentle horses, who due to their great manners will let you do anything. Tails go for high dollar on the black market to make extensions, reins, and decorative pieces like crops and hat bands.

Was most likily stolen if he isn't in with other horses. I have a friend who's horse's tail hair was cut off in the middle of the night. Turned out a few teenager boys from across the street had done it thinking it would be funny.

It sounds to me like his tail was stolen. Do you board? If so, discuss this with the owner if you haven't already, and report it to the police. Good luck!
